JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Student Advocate
JOB DESCRIPTION NARRATIVE:
Assist the needs of all secondary students. Provide district secondary students and families with information and resources available to provide the best possible educational experience.
Title VI Additional: Work with American Indian students to improve grades, test scores, attendance and behavior, and provide students and families with information and resources necessary to pursue post-secondary education.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge: High School diploma or equivalent, Bachelor’s preferred. In-depth knowledge of Native American culture/history and ability to work effectively with Native American students and families.
Skills: Basic computer skills. Effective communication skills. Strong emphasis on working with the public. Experience in working with youth.
Machines/Equipment: Computer processing, printing, district data programs, internet and on-line assessments.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with secondary students and their families to access resources such as: scholarships, financial aid, and ACT and SAT testing.
- Serve as a mentor/role model to secondary students, including taking a personal interest in at-risk youth, making personal connections with them and their families to ensure students successfully complete school.
- Perform home visits as necessary to communicate with the student’s family or check on the student’s welfare.
- Work with after-school coordinators to arrange tutoring, mentoring, counseling, and other needed interventions for secondary students at risk of academic failure.
- Work with principal, counselor, teachers and parents to identify secondary students who are at risk of not meeting State and district student academic achievement standards and assist in ensuring that those students receive appropriate interventions.
- Participate in the CARE Team process to assist in processing secondary student referrals and developing individual support plans to benefit the student and their family.
- Monitor student attendance and eligibility lists.
- Collect and report data required for program evaluations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Title VI Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Become familiar with and facilitate Native American students with community and tribal resources designed to support children such as Indian Child Welfare, DHS, Behavioral Health and Juvenile Court System.
- Provide information about district, state, and federal Indian Education programs to parents, students, teachers and administrators.
- Work with the Title VI Director and other Title VI staff in tracking and reporting graduation rates and provide data for grants, and other required reporting.
- Serve as a mentor/role model to American Indian students.
